Community Consultation Gill Net Fishing Update
Council is calling on the community to support our, Keeping our Fishing Industry & Community Alive! Campaign.
Mayor Jack Bawden said the banning of gill net fishing, apart from hurting our commercial fishing community will have long term detrimental effects on the whole community including health, education, tourism, retail and other support industries and services.
This then causes a ripple effect creating issues such as;
- Population decline and increased unemployment
- Delivery of government services potentially decreasing due to declining population.
- Property devaluation
- Increased finance & banking issues
- Potential increase in mental health issues
“Please help by writing a short submission on how closing the gill net fishing industry will affect you, your family, your business, or you sporting or social club,” Mayor Bawden said
Submissions to be completed by Friday the 1st December 2023
Hand in your submissions to either the Council Office in Karumba or Normanton or email them to council@carpentaria.qld.gov.au
